Workshop On Rice Value Chain Held In Tamale
An inter-regional workshop to address challenges in the rice value chain has ended in Tamale with a call on African countries to pool resources for the sustainability and development of the rice sector.

The Catholic Relief Services, (CRS) an a non-governmental organisation and AfricaRice Centre designed and organized the weeklong training that enabled representatives from 15 countries in West, Central and East Africa to participate it was participating countries aimed at boosting rice production and increasing incomes of farmers and marketers.

Participating countries included Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroun, Central Africa Republic, Chad, the Gambia, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Uganda and Ghana.Â
A programme Specialist with the Africa Rice Project based in Benin, Dr. Rita Agbo-Noameshie tasked non-governmental organisation’ in the rice value chain management which had benefited from the training to continually share ideas, new experiences and also develop strategies that would lead to poverty reduction in their various countries.

She said there was an urgent need to harness the new techniques adopted in the whole rice value chain effectively reduce the heavy rice importations by African countries to save money for the development of the continent.

Dr. Rita Noameshie called for more local investments from African governments for rice farmers and other businesses in the chain to make the rice sub-sector yield more successes including food sufficiency and security.

Ms. Jules Keane, CRS’s West African Regional Technical Advisor for Agriculture, said owing to the many challenges in rice production, which is a key staple in many homes, CRS and Africa Rice are working to link the various actors in order to address challenges like market access, credit for farmers and marketers as well as technology.

Among areas explored by the participants and the facilitators from CRS, Research Scientists and Africa Rice facilitators were gender, proposal writing and developing business plans and dealing with post harvest issues.
