…Yvonne Nelson sparks furore

The Actors Guild of Ghana (AGG) is set to engage the Film Regulatory Council of Ghana (FRCG) over the latter’s decision to ban star actress, Yvonne Nelson, from acting in the country.

The FRCG, at a retreat at Akosombo in the Eastern Region last week, announced a year-long ban on the actress, after it has found her of alleged unprofessional conduct and rude behavior.

The historic decision, arguably the first of its kind to hit the film industry, has triggered a massive debate among sections of the public, with many raising eyebrows over the legitimacy of the FRCG to pronounce a ban on any actor or actress in the country.

Whereas some entertainment aficionados have questioned the basis of the FRCG decision in general and thus tagged its decision as a mere flexing of muscles, others also appear to be at a complete loss as to which body in the country really wielded the ‘power’ to sanction errant actors in the country.

It is, however, in the face such growing concerns that Mr Samuel Nii Odoi Mensah, President of the AGG, the professional association of actors in the country, has disclosed to Spectator Agoro that his outfit would meet the FRCG and talk issues over.

“I’ve met with my executives and we’ve made our point known to the producers (FRCG) to officially tell them our stand,” he said on Tuesday, declining to give details of the stand taken so far by the actors’ association, as well as the date for the proposed meeting.

“We don’t want start releasing our missiles before meeting them, else they (FRCG) would know what we’re about and thus come into the meeting prepared,” he stated, adding, “in any case, we’ve not liked the way some sections of the media have so far handled the situation by insulting the producers.

“Already, the person is angry, so if you decide to insult him the more, the more he’ll also take an entrenched person. So let’s wait and see what comes out of the meeting,” he said.

Mr Odoi Mensah admitted that his outfit was aware of the existence of the FRCG, which he simply said it “has been there, and I know about it.”

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the FRCG, Mr Socrate Safo, last week, confirmed to this reporter the existence of the association and dismissed allegations that it was put together simply to ban the actress.

“The FRCG is made up of film producers, distributors, retailers and bulk sellers, and it’s been there, just that it was functioning properly as expected, but we’re now up to restore sanity in the industry,” he said.

The actress, Yvonne Nelson, has, since the inception of the development, remained silent, promising to grant an exclusive interview with Spectator Agoro on her position in due course. Watch out!
