GHANA Water Company Limited/Aqua Vitens Rand Limited have started metering water hydrants within the Accra Tema Metropolitan Area to regulate efficient use of treated water.

The move, among other things, is also to give the company a fairer idea of the amount of water loss daily.

Mr. Daniel Muomaalah, General Manager in charge of Customer Care of the company, disclosed this to newsmen yesterday when the Minister of Water Resources Works and Housing, Alban Bagbin paid a familiarization visit to the AVRL head office.

According to him, the decision was necessitated by the rumours of water pilfering by some personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service for private use.

Mr. Muomaalah said the hydrants were meant to readily provide water to the Fire Service in times of crisis and not for private purposes.

He said the company realized that some personnel of the Fire Service went for the water for private usage rather than what it was meant for, saying that initially the company sealed some of the hydrants but following persistent appeals from the public and meetings with officials of the Fire Service and other stakeholders the hydrants were opened.

Mr. Muomaalah noted that consumers were billed every month for the hydrant because of its strategic importance in times of fire outbreak, adding that it was appropriate to do a thorough check of the usage of the water so that they can render proper account.

The Minister, whose visit was the first since he assumed office, commended the workers for their effort at providing the public with potable water even in times of difficulty and urged them to do more.

He said though the public appreciated the efforts of the workers, they needed to do more for the sake of humanity, taking cognizance of the fact that their role was crucial to humanity.

The Minister said government was prepared to invest in the water sector so that the citizenry receive potable water as had been the wish of the government.

The Minister also took time to visit the Customer Care Center, the Geographic Information Systems and the metering system units to familiarize himself with their operations.

At a durbar, the workers expressed numerous concerns ranging from poor conditions of service, management’s inability to promote workers, poor salaries and public aggressiveness towards workers anytime there was a crisis.

The Minister earlier had a close door meeting with the management of the company.
