A 45-year-old Vulcanizer and farmer who allegedly assaulted her 69-year old mother and threatened to shorten her life with a cutlass has been ordered by the Koforidua Circuit Court to execute a bond of good behavior for two years, in default six months in hard labour.

Solomon Opoku, the accused was also ordered by the court presided over by Madam Wilhelmina Hammond to clean the compound of the court premises for one month of the day of order.

He was charged on three counts of assault, threat of death and for causing unlawful damage.

Opoku pleaded with the court to deal leniently with him since the complainant in the case was his mother and that he did not want to drag the issue.

Prosecuting Chief Inspector Patrick Sackitey told the court that on October 16 this year the Opoku assaulted the complainant, Akua Fremah who is also his mother and threatened to shorten her life with a cutlass at their residence at New road, a suburb of Apedwa here in the Eastern region.

He said prior to the incident, Opoku who was staying with her mother in the same house at the said location was not in talking terms with each other for the past one year.

This was due to a misunderstanding over a cocoa farmland and an orange farm owned by the complainant, Akua.

Opoku has claimed that her mother has deprived him access to these farms but rather gave her sister, one Selina Ntiriwa free access to the farms.

This caused series of alterations between Opoku on one hand and his mother and sister on the other hand.

Chief Inspector Sackitey said on the said date, there ensured a misunderstanding between Opoku and her mother Akua over the farms which resulted in Opoku giving her mother a dirty slap on her face.

When her sister, Selina who was around at the time challenged his actions, Opoku became offended to the extent that he took a cutlass from his room and threatened that to kill his mother and sister with the cutlass.

Later with the cutlass, he also caused damage to a door locker leading to the room of his mother.

The complainant together with the accused sister who realized that things were getting out of hand reported the matter to the police who arrested Opoku and charged him with the offence before the court.

Chief Inspector Sackitey said that investigations into the case revealed that the accused was a suspected drug addict who sometimes exhibited very strange or abnormal behaviours at home particularly towards his mother at home.
