A video documentary on self-help groups of people with mental illness and epilepsy as well as their careers has been launched in Accra.

The documentary, produced by Basic Needs Ghana, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), which showcases efforts made at rehabilitating various groups of stabilised mentally-ill persons and epileptic patients in Ghana, also aims at eliminating stigmatisation of such persons in their communities and among family members.

The Coordinator of the Canadian Fund for Local Initiative, Marian Tadefa Kubabon, who launched the documentary commended the NGO for the initiative and urged it to rope in other partners so as to reach out to others outside the self-help groups.

She said stabilised persons, who had undergone rehabilitation and in perfect stable condition must be assisted to overcome their challenges so that they could take back their rightful place in the society.

“That is why you need to collaborate with others with the same vision and goal to expand the programme toward engaging others who have not yet been hooked to your network,” she said.

The Country Programme Manager of Basic Needs Ghana, Badimak P Yaro, called for promotion of mental health to ensure the total development of the individual.

Mental illness, he said, could be cured, but such people needed the support of others to gain stability and become useful to themselves.

“We need to support and encourage them to realise their potential by engaging in self-supporting activities,” he said.

The Medical Director of the Pantang Hospital, Dr Anna Puklo Dzadey, appealed to relatives of stabilised persons to have a change of heart and welcome them back to the community.

That, she said, was the only way they would feel accepted to enhance their long-term recovery.
