The Upper West Regional Minister, Alhaji Issaku Saliah, has asked the youth to take advantage of the numerous opportunities available in the country for their personal development.

That, according him, was the only way they could contribute their quota to the developmental process of the nation.

“Government has shown a lot of commitment towards investing in young people by providing them with the requisite skills and guidelines for their development. It is therefore imperative for the youth to take full advantage of these opportunities to get established in life,” he said here on Tuesday at a durbar to mark the regional celebration of the Africa Youth Day.

The celebration was on the theme, ‘Dialogue and mutual understanding: Evolving strategic forums (for a) for the implementation of the National Youth Policy of Ghana”.

Alhaji Saliah said government would continue the holistic development of the youth since it was a fact that the development of every country depended on vibrant discip;ined and well informed youth.

He said the National Youth Employment Programme had witnessed a substantial growth and stability in the past few years and was currently providing enormous opportunity for young people to be trained in various fields of trade and business across the country.

“Those who find themselves in the various educational institutions should count themselves privileged and must therefore work hard to excel in their examinations,” he said, adding that it was often disheartening to both parents and government that after investing heavily in the education of the youth, they come out with appaling results.

Alhaji Saliah appealed to those youth engaged in deviant activities as ways of earning a living, to desist from those acts and take advantage of the numerous opportunities to equip themselves with employable skills.

The Regional coordinator of the National Youth Authority, Mumuni Suleman, said the authority had been mandated by government to facilitate youth development throughout the country and as such, steps were being taken to create the needed environment for young people to take advantage of.

These, he said, included the creation of a number of platforms for the youth to interact with other stakeholders for their holistic development.

He said the celebration of the Africa Youth Day presented the youth with the opportunity to reflect on their roles in the developmental process of the country and how government and other agencies could support in the development of their wellbeing.

He said as part of this year’s celebration, a number of activities including inter schools essay competitions, an outreach programme and a purity day had been drawn up for the youth.

Mr. Suleman explained that the “purity or white day” had been included in this year’s celebration to be used as a sensitisation day on the need for young people to remain sexually pure in mind and action.
