President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Ransford Tetteh has stated that unionisation of the GJA will not be a tool for unnecessary confrontation but an avenue to promote dialogue between journalists and media employers.

Mr Tetteh said this in his opening remark at the 2011 GJA/Ghana Trades Union Congress end-of-year interaction programme in Accra on Thursday.

He said the unionisation would provide the GJA the bargaining certificate to directly champion the welfare of journalists through dialogue with stakeholders especially media owners both public and private.

Mr Tetteh said the GJA was on course in executing the mandate that had been assigned to it to help transform the association into a union and commended the TUC for assigning Mr. Seth Ablosso to direct the GJA in the unionisation process.

He said events under the country’s current democratic dispensation had proven those who instituted the GJA/TUC interaction programme to be right, saying it has been a useful tool for dialogue between the two organisations and for reviewing events that happened on both the labour and media fronts in the country.

Mr Tetteh further said the dialogue had generated the media’s interest in labour issues and appealed to the TUC to assist journalists to specialize in labour reporting.

The GJA President called for the passage of the Broadcasting Bill into Law.

That, he said would contribute immensely to raising the standards in the broadcasting industry.

Kofi Asamoah, Secretary General of TUC, regretted the Freedom of Information Bill (FOIB) could not be passed into law.

Freedom of Information, he said is vital to the social, economic and political development of the country and therefore called for the early passage of the FOIB.
