Deputy Director of the African representation at the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), Mr Helda Thomas, has expressed satisfaction with Ghana’s preparation for the upcoming World Tourism Day (WTD).

Mr Thomas spent four days in Ghana visiting the WTD’s Planning Committee and Technical Team which are charged with organising and coordinating the event, to be held on September 27.

The visit included a stop over at Ho where he met established working groups, inspected conference venues, and liaised with the Minister of Tourism and other top officials in the tourism sector.

Following his inspection, Mr Thomas stated that he was very pleased with the work already completed and high level of preparation for the event.

“I am really surprised at the level of involvement and commitment towards a successful event,” he said.

The theme for this year’s WTD, “Tourism celebrating diversity” is expected to demonstrate the role of tourism in relation to global socio-cultural and economic development.

Member of the Planning Committee, Mr Victor Jeff Hagan, listed one of the anticipated highlights as being the Tourism Exhibition which will occur in the week leading up to WTD and will showcase many of the major players in the industry.

Mr Hagan invited stakeholders and industry players, both large and small, to show active interest in the event.

“This event will propel Ghana as a favourable and preferred tourism destination to the whole world,” he said.

With particular reference to the Conference Fair Exhibition, to be held during the celebrations, Mr Hagan said parties interested in attending the exhibition should move fast because of the limited openings available.

Other attractions of the event will be the Gastronomy Night, featuring Ghanaian delicacies and cooking skills, as well as a concert and fashion show aimed at portraying the culture of the country.

The public will be constantly kept abreast of all further developments. Enquiries should be directed to the Ministry of Tourism on 021-668949.
