The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) will introduce Master of Science programme in Early Childhood Education as from the next academic year.

The introduction programme is in partnership with the Wheelock College, Boston in the United State of America.

Professor Joyce Hope Scott, an Associate Professor in American Studies and Director, Urban Teacher Programme of Wheelock College, disclosed this to the TIMES, when he led a two-man delegation to visit UEW to discuss possible areas of assistance.

She said the programme will strengthen the Diploma and Bachelor programmes at the lower levels to attract students to a point where they would be eligible to enter the Master programme.

Prof. Scott explained that the two institutions will forge ahead to develop on-site early childhood education professional training through the UEW’s study centres to reach teachers who cannot be on the Campus for training.

She said “UEW and Wheelock engaged in a comprehensive strategic planning process and have begun to develop a strategic plan that will address the shortage of teachers in the area of Early Childhood Education by building capacity in ECE at UEW leading to the sustainable educational development opportunities in Ghanaian educators.”

Prof. Scott said three faculty members from UEW and members of the Wheelock Department of Early Childhood Education, Human Development and Child-Life met in Boston in July, to assess and recommend the best structure for a long-term sustainable teacher preparation programme in Ghana.

“The programme includes continuation of needs assessment, completing the final draft plan for submission to Higher Education Department and also setting up an ECE Resource Centre modeled on the Wheelock centre in Boston," she explained.

The Director of International Relations at UEW, Prof. Francis Anani Joppa said the project has the potential of helping the government in meeting its objective of making Early Childhood Education accessible to people living in the rural communities.
