The Department of Art Education of the University of Education, Winneba has opened a two-week art exhibition to showcase works by lecturers and students in Bachelor of Art Education and Graphic Design.

The theme is “Treasures from rubbles”.

The works being exhibited include paintings, drawings, sculptures, baskets, leather works, ceramics, graphic design and textile products.

Opening the exhibition, the Dean of the School of Creative Arts, Dr. Mrs Mary Dzansi-McPalm, acknowledged the importance that Visual Art plays in societal development and urged that measures be put in place to augment the rather aged equipment of the Department.

The Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Mawutor Avoke, lauded “the tremendously good works they have exhibited” and said it is a department that has the greatest potential of contributing towards the development of the nation, adding that the University would look at their grievances.

In a welcome address read on his behalf, Mr. T. R. Abban, Head of Department, said the theme of the Exhibition could not have been more appropraite at a time when the department is faced with the most difficult challenges regarding acquisition of appropriate equipment, tool and materials for teaching and learning purposes.

He said the department is operating with obsolete equipment and within a deplorable environment, adding that as creative artists, the staff and students work under very difficult conditions, using the very limited resources available to keep teaching and learning going.

Mr. Obed Kwesi Ahordjie, President of the Art Society (Artsoc), said the exhibition is “an educational and an inspirational medium aimed at exposing talents of members to the University community and the public.”

He enumerated the problems they face as limited lecture halls lack of equipment such as printing press, computers, and projectors, adding that although they had in the past volunteered funds to support the department, these were woefully inadequate to solve the problems.

Nee Nyi Kweku Mbir III, Apofohene of Effutu Traditional Area, greatly appreciated the artifacts by the students and lecturers and encouraged them to put in more efforts to help the Effutu State to be on the world map as one big stop for visual arts to attract tourists, alongside the Aboakyir Festival.
