The Students Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Cape Coast, has inaugurated the first phase of its GH˘5 million ultra modern hostel facility.

The hostel is christened “The Rev. Professor Emmanuel Adow Obeng Wing” after the immediate past Vice Chancellor of the university, for his support for the project.

Facilities in the hostel include a conference room, library, stores and offices.

The entire hostel project, when completed would have 448 rooms and would accommodate 1,500 students.

The loan for the project was secured from the Prudential Bank.

Inaugurating the block, the Central Regional Minister, Mrs Ama Benyiwa-Doe commended the students for their foresight and sense of ingenuity.

The initiative, she said, demonstrated the resolve of the current generation to help in the nation’s developmental agenda and urged other student bodies across the country to learn from the experience shown by the students of UCC.

The Vice Chancellor of UCC, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang expressed the administration’s commitment to ensure the speedy completion of the hostel project.

She said the project was a testimony of the fruit of co-existence among management of the university, students and friends of UCC.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang urged the leadership of the students to be transparent and accountable in the execution of the project.

Rev. Prof. Obeng expressed his appreciation to the students for the honour bestowed on him.

The project, he said, epitomises matured student leadership, good governance and effective relationship between the university’s administration and students.

The SRC president, Richard Asomah Kyere said the idea for the hostel was to augment the university administration’s quest to seek affordable accommodation for all UCC students.

“It is our fervent hope that this facility will reduce, if not totally eliminating, the exploitative acts of landlords and hostel operators within the University”, he added.

The challenge for the SRC now, he said, was to source for additional funding to complete the west wing of the project coupled with the furnishing of the library with state of the art equipment and books.

He therefore appealed for support to procure beds and mattresses for the hostel and the completion of the west-wing of the hostel.

He announced that the west wing of the project after completion would be named after the current Vice Chancellor, Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang.
