Two-Day Coaching Seminar Held In Accra
A two day coaching seminar has been held for hard ball level one cricket coaches in the country as part of programmes to upgrade the technical know-how of the participants at the Achimota Senior High School, Accra.
The seminar, which began on Saturday, July 7, 2012 and ended on Sunday, July 8, 2012, was organized by the Ghana Cricket Association (GCA) under the auspices of International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Africa Cricket Association (ACA).
It was also aimed at enhancing and sharpening the skills of the coaches for them to be abreast with the modern way of the sport. It also served as a platform for interested young persons interested in the coaching aspect of the game to have a firsthand knowledge in cricket.
Resource person for the class was Nigerian Cricket Coach, Mr. Okon Ukpong, with a level two certified coaching certificate from the International Cricket Council Association (ICCA).
In an interview with the Times Sports after the seminar, Mr. Ukpong expressed his appreciation to organizers and participants for their cooperation in making the exercise a success.
He urged the coaches to be committed since cricket was a very challenging and time consuming sport and charged them to act as educators to young cricket players they deal with.
He entreated them to always interact with their players and understand them since it was a major means of attaining success.
“Most African cricket players and coaches find it very difficult to express themselves and this is a big challenge which must be overcome”, he stated.
Mr. Ukpong further added that the only way young stars could be developed is by motivating them and pleaded with the coaches to bring out the positives in their players by correcting their mindsets and psyching them up.
He also said his doors were always open and would be willing to work with the GCA anytime they called on him.
