Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, paramount chief of Anfoega Traditional Area, has exonerated the ‘Ghanaian Times’ from blame over the story it carried on its front page on Monday, May 17, titled, ‘2 Ministers chastised for lateness to function’.

In that story, the ‘Times’ quoted Togbe Hodo as taking on two ministers – Joseph Amenowode for Volta Region and Mr. Alex Tetteh-Enyo for Education- for being late to the Speech and Prize-Giving Day of Anfoega Senior High School.

The two ministers, in subsequent rejoinders published in the Times, sought to explain that their lateness was known, in advance, to the school authorities who understood that they (the ministers) had to be elsewhere in the morning.

But Togbe Hodo, in a press statement signed by his Media Relations Officer, George Loh, said though he had not intended to comment on the issue, “we are compelled to react to the rejoinders since they seek to portray the fact that the displeasure expressed by Togbe was misplaced”.

Togbe argued: “If the officials claimed to have re-arranged the time for start of the programme from 9.30am, why did they apologize profusely upon arrival at the durbar ground?”

Explaining the issue, the statement said though by the invitation, the function which the Togbe was to chair was to start at 9 am, “when the Togbe and his entourage were ready to leave for the event, they received a telephone call from the organizers that the Ministers had requested that the time be changed to 11 am since they were in Ho for a function.

“At exactly 11 am, Togbe and his entourage arrived at the school ground ready for the function to join the other guests, parents and students who were already seated since 9 a.m.

“At 12 noon when the Ministers had not arrived, it was then that Togbe, the chairman, asked the programme to commence and upon that, made the comment attributed to him by the reporter.

“It is noteworthy that the Ministers together with the Regional Director of Education arrived a little after 1:00 pm and apologized for their inability to arrive earlier at the function,” it said.

Meanwhile, Togbe Hodo has stressed that it is important that “all public officials, being role models, lead by example. Keeping to time and punctuality is the starting point if we are to achieve a better Ghana agenda”.

Having set the records straight, the statement said, “Togbe wishes to also commend the Regional Minister for his dutifulness and frequent visits to the traditional area and encourages him to keep it up.”
