The ongoing road rehabilitation work in Tema and surrounding areas is about 30 per cent complete.

Early this year the government awarded the 53 km roads valued at GH˘29.2 million to be completed by April next year.

The roads have been adversely affected by last year’s rains.

Mr. Stephen Attipoe, Tema Urban Roads Engineer, disclosed this here on Tuesday, at a press briefing.

The meeting was to shed light on progress of work and address concerns raised by the public.

Mr. Attipoe said the contractors working on the 14.5 kilometres of the road from the Nungua barrier to Meridian road had finished laying crush rocks and would soon start tarring the road.

Another company engaged in rehabilitating 14.5 kilometres of the road from Tema Oil Refinery to the Kpone road, Kpone Barrier to the Kpone-township and Ashaiman to Zenu, had completed the drains and applied chip seal on the Kpone road.

He, however, noted that the scope of work had changed from 14.5 km to 18 km, since instead of asphaltic overlay on the TOR road, pavement blocks would be used in front of the refinery to withstand the heavy load transported across the road.

Mr. Attipoe said in line with that the management of TOR had pledged to donate $100,000 towards the pavement project.

He, therefore, urged the contractor to concentrate on the TOR – Kpone road because of its strategic nature to ensure its early completion.

Mr. Attipoe said the company working on the 16.5 km road in the Central Business Unit and from Mankoadse round-about to the Nestle Ghana Limited, had patched isolated potholes, applied crush rocks on the 1 kilometre Republic road and completed the second ceiling while drain works are far advanced.

Four other contractors working on the 8.5 km Lashibi-Klagon road have completed work.

Mr. Attipoe said so far government had paid the contractors for the work done.

He therefore tasked them to furnish the Urban Roads with their revised work programme for monitoring purposes.

He appealed to the members of the public to bear with the inconveniences created as a result of the ongoing road work.

In an answer to concerns by some members of the public regarding the emergence of potholes on the ongoing construction on the republic road, he said the roads will be finally asphalted to prevent potholes.

Mr. Robert Kempes Ofosuware, the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive advised the contractors to ensure that the government got value from the huge amount of money spent on the road project.

He urged those who had complains about the ongoing project to approach the Assembly.

The representatives of the contractors were grateful to government for reimbursing them and promised that by November ending a considerable part of the project will be completed.
