The police were detailed to maintain law and order on the campus after pandemonium broke out during a schools sports competition hosted by Techiman Senior High.

Five students and a tutor of Techiman Senior High who were arrested during the clash spent the night behind bars at the Techiman police station.

A highly placed source at the Techiman Senior High, told the ‘Times’ that students from the Akumfi Ameyaw Senior High, Nkoranza Secondary Technical, Boayem Senior High, Tuobodom Senior High and Busunya Senior High schools had met for a two-day sports festival.

At the start of the competition on Friday, the male and female football teams of Techiman Senior High were disqualified for arriving late to the playing field.

The source said students of the other schools, happy about Techiman Senior High schools disqualification teased them with songs. Angered by the host students attempted to attack the other students camped in the school.

This degenerated into a clash during which school property were destroyed.

The source said it was at this point that the school authorities called in the police.

The first batch of policemen that arrived had to call for reinforcement as the students threw stones at them.

According to the source, the reinforcement, upon arrival, wrongfully targeted the female dormitory where the girls were holed up and fired rounds of tear gas at the building.

Techiman District Crime Officer, Seth Werempeh, told the Times on telephone although tear gas was used, it was not directed at the girls’ dormitory.

ASP Werempeh explained that the students had attacked the police and damaged three of their vehicles, beaten up a watchman of the school and destroyed property.

He said under the circumstance it became necessary to use tear gas after which 133 students were rescued.

He added that those arrested were granted police enquiry bail and were assisting in the investigations.
