The Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) now operates from a new tower block known as ‘E- Block’ which forms part of the upgrading process.

This has now paved way for the rehabilitation and refurbishment of the old tower block was constructed in 1974.

Work on the new facility commenced in April 2010, when President John E. Mills cut sod for the Tamale Teaching Hospital project funded by the governments of Ghana and The Netherlands.

The four –storey facility will house the Accident and Emergency Department, surgical suites (theatres), Maternity, Intensive Care Unit, Neo-natal Intensive Care, Radiology and CT Scan among others.

Minister of Health, Alban S.K. Bagbin, who handed over the symbolic key to the TTH authorities said, the project was a demonstration of the NDC Government’s commitment to the people by way of transforming health care delivery.

“The government will fulfil its electoral promises to ensuring that the Tamale Teaching Hospital is well functional and equipped with not just infrastructure, but also with logistics and well as adequate human resources to deliver optimum health service.”

Mr. Bagbin said after the first phase of the TTH project to be inaugurated President by the in November, this year, government would expand the 600 bed capacity hospital to a 1,000 -bed to serve the people of the north as well as facilitates the training of UDS medical students.

In that regard, Mr. Bagbin said, government had procured 267- million dollars equipment which would arrive next month, a component of which would be delivered to the TTH.

Touching of the challenges facing the hospital, the Health Minister assured that both water and electricity shortages were being addressed by the Ministry.

Mr. Bagbin hinted that a dedicated water supply line had been constructed and will soon be connected to augment the water supply to the TTH, adding that contract for the supply and installation of a 5MVA electric substation mainly for the hospital was also on course.

He entreated the authorities and clients to adopt good maintenance culture to enhance the life span of the facility.       
   
The Chief Executive Officer of the TTH Dr. Ken Sagoe pledged that the staff would use the facility to improve health delivery saying that “this new edifice poses, a challenge to us and we will live up to serving the overall health needs of our people.”

He commended government and its partners for sponsoring the project and appealed that plans to expand the facility to a 1,000- bed capacity hospital should materialize in time.

Moses Bukari Mabengba, Northern Regional Minister, said the Tamale Teaching Hospital project had silenced critics who said the Better Ghana Agenda was mere political rhetoric.
