Two grants to enhance the work of the Criminal Data and Statistical Bureau (CDSB) of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have been made available to the Police Service, the IGP, Paul Tawiah Quaye, has said.

The grants are 12.5 million and three million dollars from Spain and the European Union respectively.

He said four million dollars out of the two grants would be used for the purchase of an automated fingerprint and identification systems for the department.

“The establishment and operation of a DNA laboratory and an automated fingerprint identification system are two conspicuous components that can boost scientific investigations and the operational effectiveness of the Criminal Investigations Department,” he stated.

Briefing personnel of the department at their annual West African Security Service Association (WASSA) celebration, last Friday, Mr. Quaye said the Forensic Laboratory was being refurbished under the EU grant.

Besides, funds were being sourced for the procurement of vital crime detection equipment to enable the department to cope with the advancing technological criminality trends.

He expressed concern about the spate of fire outbreak and bomb threats spreading across the country and urged detectives to elicit information to identify the faceless and unscrupulous individuals behind those crimes.

The CID, he said, had a duty to stop those fake and ill-intended alarms before a permanent damage was inflicted on the image of the country’s security agencies.

The IGP asked detectives to guard against corrupt practices or fall foul of the law since they would not be shielded by the administration or spared by the law.

The Director General, CID DCOP, Frank Adu-Poku, said recreation was directly linked with effectiveness, efficiency and higher productivity in working life emphasising that since the department had gone through a hectic year, such a gathering was necessary to release stress and tension to enable the personnel to perform letter.

He said the CID headquarters was receiving a facelift and pleaded with the IGP for funds to tackle problems confronting the department and also build a new detective training school.

Mr. Adu-Poku called on all detectives to act professionally in cases they handle by employing new technological techniques and also respect the rights of suspects.
