The South African High Commission in Ghana on Saturday organised a Mandela Day Campaign at the SOS Children’s Village in Tema to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s 91st birthday.
The High Commissioner, Ntombizodwa Lallie joined the children at the village for the celebration.
She said the day has been set aside for people to volunteer 67 minutes of their time for community service, charity work and to honour the achievement, struggle and dedication of Nelson Mandela to South Africa.
Sixty-seven minutes signifies Mandela’s imprint on the world since 1942 when he first started to compaign for the woman’s rights for South Africans.
The High Commissioner donated 15 buckets of paint to the village, educational toys and organised some refreshment for the children.
In remembrance of the day, handprints were made on a wall by the children of the village.
The Minister of Women and Childrens’s Affairs Akua Sena Dansua, who was the guest speaker said, children of the village should learn from the life of Nelson Mandela — be humble and, cultivate the spirit of forgiveness, among other good attributes.
“No matter what we go through, we should offer holistic humility, grow with a mindset and offer sound help to society,” she said.
The minister pledged an amount of GH¢300 to pay for the cost of painting the school.
Meanwhile the SOS Herman Gmeiner School in Tema on Saturday organised a food bazaar and funfair as part of its 30th anniversary activities.
The programme was sponsored by Nestle, SCAM Construction, Unilever, Golden Tulip and Afrikiko.

The headteacher of the school, Mr Kow Kabraba-Yamoah told the Times that the bazaar and the funfair was organised not only for entertainment but to also raise funds for the improvement of the school.
