Six Envoys Present Credentials To President

PRESIDENT John Evans Atta Mills yesterday received Letters of Credence from six new Ambassadors to Ghana, and gave assurance that the government is determined to strengthen relations with their respective countries to address various economic challenges.

Receiving them separately at the Jubilee House in Accra, President Mills said Ghana was prepared to work more closely with other countries with the aim of achieving sustainable development.

“Our doors are open,” he stressed.

The new Ambassadors were Larbi Katti, Algeria; Rafek Salim Abudalfa, Palestine; Milosvac Machalek, Czech Republic; Vladmir Barbin; Russia, Dr. Ali Ahmed Al-Ghadban, Libya and Clauden Maerten, European Union.

President Mills welcomed the envoys to Ghana and urged them to assist in building on the foundations their predecessors have laid for enhancing ties between Ghana and their respective countries.

Receiving the Letter from Mr Katti of Algeria, President Mills called for more collaboration between the two countries particularly in sharing experiences in the management of the oil and gas industry.

“There is more that should bind us,” he said, reiterating the need for African states to work more closely to tackle the numerous socio-economic problems.

For his part Ambassador Katti promised to contribute to efforts towards strengthening bilateral relations, as well as explore investment opportunities for the benefit of the two countries.

After receiving the Letter of Credence from the Palestine Ambassador, President Mills expressed Ghana’s support for peace in the Middle East, saying peace was cardinal towards improving the lot of the people there.

“We believe in peace,” he stressed, and called on the leadership of Palestine to continue to promote the welfare of the people.

Mr. Abudalfa for his part thanked Ghana for her support to the course of freedom and peace in Palestine.

He also lauded Ghana for the political stability, and gave the assurance that efforts for peace in the Middle East were yielding results.

President Mills, addressing the European Union Ambassador, expressed gratitude to the EU for the development assistance, saying “the EU has been one of our valued development partners.”

The President was particularly grateful to the EU for the watchdog role it played during December 2008 elections, saying the work of the EU Observer mission contributed to the success of the elections.

In that regard, the President pledged the government’s full cooperation to strengthen the ties between the EU and Ghana.

“With your collaboration and support, we should be able to achieve the objectives of a better Ghana,” he said.


For his part, the EU Ambassador also commended Ghana for the leadership role it was playing for the progress of Africa.

He described as remarkable, socio-economic gains achieved by the country over the years, and assured the government of the EU’s continuous assistance.

On Russia, President Mills traced the relations between her and Ghana to the 1960’s when Ghanaian engineers and medical doctors went to that country for training, and expressed the desire for that relationship to be enhanced.

“We have enjoyed immense support from Russia and we have co-operated economically with Russia.

“Russia, as a world power, has a lot to offer us,” he said, and gave the assurance of the government’s continuous cooperation.

Ambassador Barbim described the relations between the two countries as encouraging, adding that there were more prospects for the bilateral ties between the countries.

To the Libyan Ambassador, President Mills said, “we cherish our relations with Libya,” and conveyed his regards to the Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi.

Dr. Ghadban, promised to do his best to strengthen the relations between the people of Ghana and Libya during his duty tour.
