Multinational Telecommunication Network (MTN) has started an education project to support some selected schools in the northern region.

This was announced at the launch of the Academy for Education Development (AED) project in Tamale in the Northern Region.

This project is a collaboration between MTN and the Centre for Education Development and Management, CEDEM, a Ghanaian non-governmental organisation which helps Ghanaian children to gain access to high quality education.

The MTN/AED project is one of the numerous projects being undertaken by the social investment wing of MTN, MTN Foundation, to give back to communities within which they operate.

MTN has been initiating and supporting many projects aimed at improving the quality of life of people.

These projects are in the area of health and education which is the main focus of the MTN foundation.

Some of these projects include equipping and rehabilitating the Korle-Bu maternity ward, distribution of mosquito nets to fight malaria and building of ICT centres in all regions of the country.

This new MTN Foundation project involves equipping the school with the requisite facilities and personnel to help upgrade the standard of tuition in the school.

MTN intends to create a conducive learning environment for pupils in deprived schools by working with teachers, pupils, parents and other key community and district stakeholders to improve teaching and learning in the classroom.

It is expected that by the end of the three-year project, pupils would be able to read, write and communicate effectively.
The project is valued at $70,000 and would support over 10,000 children in the northern region.

At the end of the three-year MTN/AED programme communities in the project area would own upgraded schools and all members of the selected communities especially illiterate parents would better appreciate the essence of education.

This is because orientations and workshops that would be organised during the period of the project would involve chiefs, SME, PTA, parents, headteachers, teachers and district education officers.

The training programmme would also be very beneficial to district education officers who will be equipped with the requisite knowledge to continue advising and monitoring good practices and supervising ongoing results.

It is always fulfilling for MTN to invest in society for a good cause.

MTN recognises the positive implications of giving good education to children in the northern region and is proud to be involved in the MTN/AED project.
