THE Omanhene of Sankore in the Brong-Ahafo Region, Okogyeadee Yaw-Adusei, III, has appealed to supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to stop their retaliatory activities in his traditional area.
He explained that the continuous antagonism between the two political groups which had already recorded casualties since last year could degenerate further into impunity and lawlessness.
He lamented that what started as a misunderstanding during the voters’ registration exercise between the NDC and NPP had resulted into numerous confrontations, attacks and counter-attacks by supporters of both parties even as at now.
At a press conference held at his palace on Monday, Okogyeadee Yaw-Adusei who looked worried appealed to the leadership of both parties to initiate measures towards peaceful settlement, stressing that most of the youth involved in the conflict were blood relatives.
Sankore is eventually tarnishing its hard won image through the negative media reports of fighting between the NDC and NPP supporters, the Omanhene stated.
He blamed some elders in the community for fueling the misunderstanding for their selfish gains, claiming that such “characters” were known but remained untouchable.
According to him, some of these “characters” had exploited the conflict to an extent that his traditional council had been dragged into it without justification.
Okogyeadee Yaw-Adusei cited for example that “some members of the NPP went on radio to say that I was present and instructed NDC supporters to shot and kill one Kwame Nyame, when in fact I was nowhere near the scene.”
He cautioned that the extent to which these rumours were been peddled could explode the already tensed situation with unbearable consequences.
“I therefore appeal to political parties to leave my traditional council out of their conflict,” he said.
“I am not a ‘politician’ but a traditional ruler with a mandate to serve my people and see to their well-being,” he added.
Okogyadee Yaw-Adusei said one of the people behind all the problems in the area, was one Wafa Atta who, he alleged organised an attack on his palace sometime ago damaging a statue in front of the palace.
The Omanhene urged the government to beef up police personnel in the town, and arrest all those causing the trouble.
