THE Effutu Municipal Assembly has expressed concern about sand winning, resulting in degrading the land for farming or residential development impossible.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Nii Ephraim, said this at the 27th Effutu Municipal Farmers’ Day celebration at Effutu Osubonpanyi, near Winneba.
Seventeen fishermen and farmers were awarded for their outstanding performance, with Mr. Kwesi Quansah from Winneba, being adjudged the Best District Farmer.
The MCE appealed to the youth and the chiefs to help the Assembly to protect the farm lands left to provide resources for the youth to go into farming, adding that the Youth-in-Agriculture programme in the municipality was very successful and needed to be continued.
He said the government’s plan to construct a fishing landing site and a cold store was on course, and announced that the Assembly was looking for investors to support the people in fish farming.
The Effutu Municipal Director of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Gershon Woaziriah, said farmers in the area cropped 2,980 hectares of maize in 2011, yielding 5,650 metric tonnes and representing about six per cent increase over last year’s production.
For cassava, the total acreage cultivated this year was 3,440 hectares, which were estimated to yield 44,854 metric tonnes and represents five per cent increase over 2010.
The chief of Osubonpanyi, Neenyi Ackon Agyeef VI, who chaired the function, appealed to the youth to go into farming since it was a lucrative venture.
