A group of armed robbers on Saturday attacked some Chinese nationals allegedly engaged in illegal gold mining, popularly called galamsey, killing one of them.

The incident, which occurred at about 8:30pm at Manso-Mpatasie in the Amansie West District of Ashanti, saw the robbers making away with several items, including cash, mobile phones as well as some gold.

Police Superintendent, S.K. Kwakye, Manso Nkwanta District Police Commander, confirmed the incident to The Ghanaian Times and said investigations were ongoing.

It is gathered that the robbers attacked a team of Chinese and asked them to surrender their money.

But, the deceased, popularly called Mr. ‘’O’’ was said to have told the robbers that they had no money with them.

To put fears in them, the robbers were said to have fired warning shots but later shot Mr. ‘’O’’ in the stomach, killing him on spot.

His body has been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital’s morgue.

A similar incident happened at Fiankoba, when a Chinese galamsey operator known only as J.J, was killed on May7, this year, together with a 14-year old boy, Kofi Boakye.
The case is still being investigated by the police.

Most of the Chinese illegal gold miners are said to have their camps spread throughout the Amansie area, including Kowewaso, Akutoase, Manso-Mpatasie and Fiankoba.

It is recalled that 39 Chinese illegal miners were arrested on May 23, while working in an AGA concession at Akutoase, by the Obuasi police who sent them to the police headquarters in Kumasi for further investigation.

Three excavators and six pick-ups were seized by the police during their arrest.

But, they were all released and handed over to the Immigration Service.

Earlier the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Augustine Gyening, when contacted said the case was between the suspects and AGA whose concession were invaded and the police would have to take their time to investigate it.

The Ashanti Regional Commander of the Immigration Service, Ebenezer M. Acquaah said that the Chinese were still being investigated.
