AN eight-member working group has been inaugurated for the Public Procurement Authority (PPA).

The group is tasked with the responsibility of reviewing the deliverables of Crown Agents, the consulting firm engaged to develop curricula and modules in public procurement for use by tertiary institutions in Ghana.

This was contained in a release issued in Accra on Thursday.

The group which was inaugurated by the Chief Executive Officer of the Public Procurement Authority, Mr Adjenim Boateng Adjei, according to a press release in Accra on Thursday, would undertake the programme in collaboration with the Millennium Development Authority (MIDA).

The project, according to the release, formed part of the PPA’s medium and long-term capacity development agenda aimed at providing intensive and continuous training in procurement to practitioners and interested Ghanaians who desire to have the requisite mix of knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary for procurement tasks and responsibilities under the Public Procurement Act, 2003 (Act 663) alongside professional qualifications.

The release explained that the training would also sustain the institution of a structured career progression for both practitioners and professionals within the public services besides providing a source of competent manpower for the private sector.

“Under the project, modules will be developed for three to six months intensive training in procurement targeted specifically at procurement practitioners currently working in the public sector and would start at levels three, four, five and six of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply”.

The release added that 15 to 245 months additional intensive training programme would also be organised for HND holders who wished to acquire Bachelor’s degrees.

It stated that as an interim, some selected institutions currently offering degree programmes in management studies were to begin the introduction of electives options in procurement in the first quarter of 2010.

The group which consists of experts from tertiary institutions, the National Accreditation Board, National Council for Tertiary Education, National Board for Profession and Technician Exams, MIDA and PPA among others, is expected to complete its work in December.
