President John Evans Atta Mills has renewed his call for peace and unity among the people of the Upper West region, saying that the divisions in the region have become counter productive.

The various development initiatives planned for the region would not yield the necessary benefits if the people remained divided, President Mills said yesterday when he swore into office, Alhaji Issaku Saliah, the new Upper West Regional Minister at the Castle in Accra.

The objective of the appointment of Alhaji Saliah, according to the President, was to help build unity among the people including the rank and file of the ruling NDC in the region, to pave the way to meet the region’s development challenges.

Alhaji Saliah, a former MP for Wa West, replaces Mahmud Khalid, who was relieved of his post last May.

“You have been appointed at a time that we are having problems in the region,” President Mills told the new Minister, and reminded him that much would be expected of him to deal with those problems.

He lauded the Minister’s style of leadership during his tenure as Wa West MP and a leader of the party, and expressed optimism that he would bring his vast experience to bear on his new post.

“Please listen to the people and involve all in your administration,” he advised him, saying “we are confident that we have made the right choice.”

Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu, a member of the Council of State congratulated the Minister on his appointment and urged him to work hard to achieve unity in the region.

He said it was crucial for all to feel involve in the management and development of the region, stressing that people would make meaningful contributions when they feel involved.

Alhaji Saliah, thanked the President for offering him the opportunity to serve the region and the country, saying, “I am humbled by the appointment.”

He said he was mindful of the need for unity and development in the region and promised to work hard to justify the confidence reposed in him.
