President Mills Welcomes New Envoys

President John Evans Atta Mills has renewed Ghana’s commitment to work closely with other countries towards addressing development challenges, saying the government will continue to explore all development opportunities.
 
He said it was critical for Ghana to forge productive co-operation with other countries in order to share more ideas and resources in addressing common development problems facing the citizenry.
 
President Mills renewed the pledge when he received the letters of credence of four foreign envoys accredited to Ghana at the Jubilee House in Accra .
 
They are Mehmet Kenan Tepedelen of Turkey, Madam Olga Cabarga Gomez of Spain, Rifat Rondic of Serbia and Stefan Scholz of Austria.
 
The President said the government was mindful of the need for more cooperation with other countries, especially so because “economic challenges affect all countries,” and governments could not work in isolation.
 
Because governments have a common aim of improving the welfare of their people, he said it was critical that there was cross-country collaboration and sharing of ideas in pursuing that development agenda.
 
In addition, he said, Ghana valued her relations with other countries and pledged to play her role in the commity of nations.
 
Addressing the Turkish Ambassador after receiving his Letter of Credence, he described as “remarkable” recent development in the bilateral relations between Ghana and Turkey.
 
He said the government was grateful for the commitment of Turkey in collaborating with Ghana in various areas of economic development and promised that Ghana would reciprocate.
 
The President commended the government of Turkey for initiating the establishment of an embassy in Ghana, saying the move was important towards ensuring a successful progress of the Ghana’s relations with Turkey.
 
“We are very grateful and we believe this is a sign for good things to happen in our relations,” he said
 
He congratulated the new Turkish envoy and assured him of “our total support and commitment to work together initiatives that would to inure to the benefit of our countries.”
 
Addressing the Spanish Ambassador, President Mills said he had no doubt that her tenure would witness a stronger relationship between Ghana and Spain .
 
He described Spain as an important development partner, and assured that country of Ghana ’s full cooperation towards addressing common development challenges.
 
He cited some far reaching initiatives being introduced by Spain in its relationship with Africa, and promised that Ghana would offer the necessary support in ensuring the successful implementation of those initiatives which focus on trade with Africa .
 
The President said Ghana valued her relations with Austria and expressed optimism that the best would be achieved out of the relations, adding, “There is a lot that we can do together.”
 
Interacting with the Serbian envoy, President Mills cited the good relations enjoyed by Ghanaians in Serbia and said Ghana would continue to collaborate with serbia for development purposes.
 
Responding to the remarks, Mr Tepedelen, Ambassador of Turkey, promised to explore new ideas of economic cooperation between Ghana and Turkey towards socio-economic development of the two countries.
 
He also thanked President Mills for accepting to Ghana, and gave the assurance that he would build on the successes of his predecessor.
 
“I aspire in order to accomplish my mission, to benefit from your kind support as well as that of the government,” he said.
 
Madam Cabarga said the government of Spain desired for more trade and cultural cooperation with Ghana , and expressed that country’s commitment in that regard.
 
The two countries, she said, have a lot in common and assured Ghana that they have a reliable partner in Spain in dealing with the challenges.
 
For his part Mr Rondic of Serbia commended Ghana for its leading role in peace and democratic development in Africa, adding that Serbia appreciates Ghana ’s understanding and support for not recognizing the unilateral self proclamation of the independence of the Serbia Autonomous Province of Kosovo.
 
“This solidarity we have received from Ghana, encourages us to resolve the future status of Kosovo peacefully,” he said.
 
He lauded the improved relationship between the Ghana and Serbia , and promised to contribute in enhancing the gains achieved.
 
“With your kind support, I will spare no effort to further deepen all aspects of relations between our two friendly countries,” he assured the President.
 
In his remarks, Ambassador Stefan Scholz of Austria said Austria is one of Ghana’s smaller trade partners, their trade relations was showing a positive trend with the doubling trade volumes in 2009, with the balance of trade in favour of Ghana.
 
He also lauded Ghana ’s continuous dialogue with the European Union which Austria is a member, saying that Austria as a member of the EU was actively involved in the formulation of EU’s development cooperation with Ghana .
