President John Evans Atta Mills has eulogised former South African President, Nelson Mandela, saying he is an example of a good leader.
“He is an icon and an example of what a good leader should be,” President Mills said as he undertook a clean-up exercise on Saturday to mark Mandela’s 91st birthday.
Wishing the former South African President well, President Mills said, Mandela’s excellent leadership qualities needed to be emulated by all Africans.
“We wish him well,” he said, and prayed for has life for him so that his presence would continue to inspire young African leaders.
President Mills, who spent part of the Saturday morning cleaning the Castle Gardens, urged all Ghanaians to spend 67 minutes of the day to undertake a humanitarian job in honour of Mandela.
Refusing to be assisted, President Mills, who emerged from his residence at the Castle at Osu in Accra at 7am in a while track suit and a broom in hand, swept the Gardens and collected the rubbish, mainly leaves, as a group of officials and security personnel looked on.
President Mills fully supported a declaration by the15th Summit of the Heads of States and Government of the Non Aligned Movement (NAM) in Sharma El Sheikh, Egypt, to observe July 18, as Nelson Mandela International Day.
As part of the Summit's declaration of July 18 as Nelson Mandela Day, NAM member states and people were asked to contribute 67 minutes of their time in service of their communities in "recognition of Mandela’s 67 years contribution in service to humanity."
President Mills, on his return on home on Friday, originally planned to undertake his humanitarian work at the Castle Clinic but opted for the Castle Gardens later.
