The President yesterday gave a glimpse of the country’s future, saying the socio-economic prospect looks very bright.

“There is no doubt Ghana has the potential of becoming a very prosperous country, and I can see bright lights at the end of the tunnel,” President Mills said during an interaction with members of the Presidential Press Corps and Presidential Staffers at the Castle, Osu.

But the President, who turned 65 years yesterday, was quick to add that much work remains to be done to be able to reach the end of the tunnel.

“There is more work ahead,” he told the gathering which was called at the instance of the press corps to provide an opportunity to wish the President happy birthday.

Although the development challenges are many, he said the government would not shirk its responsibility, but remain committed to addressing difficulties hindering national progress.

He said he was confident that the government is instituting the right measures to effectively address the socio-economic challenges, and assured Ghanaians that they would not regret for having chosen his administration to manage the country.

“With determination, hard work, transparency and unity of purpose, we shall get there with the help of God,” he said.

President Mills spent all the day working, refusing to take a break because he said birthdays are not for merrymaking but for stocktaking and urged members of his administration to do their best in contributing to achieve the government’s objective of improving the welfare of the citizenry.

“It’s difficult but we must work hard for the people to have confidence in us.”

He said he was humbled by the thought of reaching 65 years as leader of Ghana, adding that the day reminded him of the need for him to contribute to addressing problems facing the country.

“Birthdays are a reminder that time is running out and that you have to achieve something before your time is out,” he said.

President Mills, who spent about 20 minutes interacting with the gathering and answering questions, urged people especially those in leadership, to resolve to work hard towards leaving behind a positive legacy for society.

Ghanaians should not look forward so much to what reward they would get for serving the nation he said, adding that the  greatest reward that one could get for serving one’s nation does not come from one’s compatriots but from the inner-self of having paid one’s dues.

The President however noted that the government is committed to rewarding people who serve their country, saying “a nation that does not honour its heroes is not worth dying for.”

He thanked Ghanaians for the support they continue to offer the government, and gave the assurance that the government would justify the confidence reposed in it.

President Mills will this morning, open a three-day investment forum in Accra, where he will galvanize the support of the investment community in sharing in his vision of building a better Ghana.

In view of the effects of the global economic downturn and the challenges facing the local economy, President Mills is also expected to appeal to local and foreign investors to collaborate and direct more of their investments to the agricultural sector which holds the key to national economic growth.

The investment forum, the first to be addressed by President Mills since assuming office, is being organised under the auspices of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre.
