PERSONNEL of the Police Highway Patrol Unit (HPU) on duty on the Tema-Akosombo highway on Sunday intercepted a Hyundai urvan bus loaded with nine bags of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
Three people, the driver, his mate and a third person who allegedly attempted to bribe the police with GHC 3,000.00 have been arrested and are assisting the police in their investigations.
They are George Asare, 23, the driver, Bismark Danquah,24,, the mate and Stephen Fiano, 18, the attempted briber.
Briefing the Times in Accra yesterday, the Commander of the Unit, Superintendent Frank Anning said on Sunday at about 4: pm, the police on their patrol duties saw the urvan bus with registration number, GW 1036 Z, parked at Bele-kope, near Kpong on the Tema-Akosombo road.
He said the police proceeded to the vehicle and saw nine bags loaded with dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
He said upon interrogation, the driver and his mate claimed the goods belongs for a passenger who loaded the goods at Asikuma that they should drop them for somebody in Accra.
Superintendent Anning said when the police were escorting the driver and mate to Accra to assist in investigation, they were pursued by Fiano who attempted to bribe the police with GHC3, 000.00 to enable them drop the case.
He said the police collected the money and subsequently arrested Fiano, for attempting to bribe a public officer.
The suspects, he said are currently in police custody assisting in investigations, after which they will be put before court.
Meanwhile the Police Intelligence and Professional Bureau Standards (PIPS) at the police headquarters had finished their preliminary investigations on the three police personnel of HPU who allegedly stole money from an accident victim on the Accra Tema motorway, barely three weeks ago.
The Director of the Police Public Affairs Directorate, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Samuel Kwesi Ofori, who told the Times yesterday said the case was subsequently forwarded to the Crminal Investigations Department to investigate the criminal aspect of the case and consequently prosecute the suspects.
The suspects, Inspector Olivia Asobayere, Corporal Maxwell Boampong and Lance Corporal Charles Quaye, were said to be on a patrol duties on the Accra-Tema motorway where they chanced on an accident.
They allegedly stole 500,000 from the accident victim. The wife of the deceased who was peeved by the action of the three, reported the matter to the police administration who order the arrest and detention of the officers to assist in investigation in connection with the crime.
