Parliament yesterday came under heavy criticism from some of its members for  always paying lip service to the issue of road safety through statements but are unable to take concrete action.

They contended that statements are always made the need to curb the spate of accidents on the roads and yet such statements are in effective.

Papa Owusu-Ankomah(NPP-Sekondi) and Deputy Minority Leader in Parliament Ambrose Dery(Lawra/Nandom), were worried that often times the house made a lot of statement on road accident but the house was found wanting in terms of action plans to address the issue and ensure discipline on the roads.

‘’We make statements and express condolences’ to victims of road accidents and it ends there, if we fail to take action and make the road safe, the consequence  will ultimately  be on us,” Mr Dery warned.

They expressed the need for the Ministry of Road and Highways to brief the house on the measures being taken to enforce legislations to ensure road   safety in the country.

Dr Richard Anane (NPP-Nhyiaeso) and former Minister of Transportation expressed the need for a road traffic law to be passed by the House to replace the road ordinance of 1954 for effective road traffic regulation.

They were contributing to a statement made by Emmanuel Buah (NDC-Ellembelle) and Deputy Minister of Energy on road accidents and the need to revisit legislations relating to road use to make them effective.

Mr Buah noted that the accident involving Mr Ayariga was caused by a stationery vehicle parked by the road side and stressed the need to deal with the   problem that was causing road accident in the country.

The statement came in the wake of   two separate road accidents involving Mahama Ayariga, Deputy Minister of Education and the Majority Leader in Parliament, Cletus Avoka that occurred at Nasia on the Bolgatanga Tamale road  and at Zebilla in the Upper East Region, at the weekend.

They were accompanying President J.E.A. Mills on a duty tour of the region.

Mr Avoka who is the Member of Parliament for Zebilla was treated and discharged from the hospital and has returned to Parliament while Mr Ayariga is recuperating at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

Members of the house expressed their sympathies to all victims of road accidents and thanked God for saving the lives of the two and particularly wished Mr Ayariga speedy recovery.
