Our Gains Will Not Be Sacrificed On Political Altar - Mills

President John Evans Atta Mills has given a firm assurance that he socio-economic gains made by the country will not be sacrificed for political gains, and promised more diligence to enhance the fortunes of the nation.

“We are not taking these achievements for granted, and I assure you that we will not sacrifice our gains on the altar of election year politics,” he said.
Addressing members of the Diplomatic Corps in Ghana at an annual get-together held at the Flag Staff House in Accra on Friday evening to exchange New Year greetings, President Mills also gave the assurance that his administration would continue to work to consolidate the development gains achieved by the country.
He cited a number of gains which contributed to the nation’s economy growing by an unprecedented 13.4 per cent last year, and thanked the international community for its support.
“We will continue to work with you in the last leg of my first term to consolidate the gains achieved,” he said, adding that Ghana couldn’t have made such significant progress without the valuable support of the international community.

He expressed confidence that Ghana and the countries represented by the diplomatic corps, would remain strong allies in the years ahead, and reiterated his commitment towards deepening the bonds of friendship and co-operation with other countries.
Touching on the impending elections, President Mills reiterated his administration’s determination to ensure free and fair elections, without compromising the peace and stability that the nation has enjoyed over the years.
He, however, urged the diplomats to offer their support since the assistance of the I international community was vital in ensuring the success of the elections.
“Please keep a close eye on the election and do not hesitate to alert us if you think there are things we need to know,” President Mills said.

President Mills commended Gabon and Equatorial Guinea for hosting the ongoing African Cup of nations, and wished all the teams the best.

Sini Pierre Sanou, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, in his address, commended Ghana for the steady impressive economic and political gains, saying Ghana’s progress offers a lot of motivation to other developing nations.
“We noticed the comprehensive development, which spans all relevant socio-economic areas, including oil, gas, mining, agriculture, trade and industry, road infrastructure and others, which are the bedrock of any meaningful progress,” he said.

He said the diplomatic community was also impressed about President’s commitment to enhanced democracy and praised him for his contributions to peace in the West African sub-region, Africa and the United Nations.

Mr. Sanou called on the international community for a concerted effort towards the fight against drugs, arms and human trafficking as well as terrorism, saying it was times for decisive action.

At part of the event, the envoys took turns took turns to exchange pleasantries with the President and other senior government officials.
