The Intensive Road Maintenance Works, the newest module under the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP), was launched in Accra yesterday with an initial target of providing jobs for 10,000 unemployed youths across the country.
The innovative initiative, the is aimed at helping to address the challenge of job creation and poor maintenance, as thousands of young people would be equipped to undertake regular maintenance works to ensure that the nation’s roads are in good condition for safe usage.
The launch paves way for the beginning of large scale recruitment and training under the programme, which the NYEP is undertaking in collaboration with the Ministries of Roads and Highways, Local Government and Rural Development, and a number of private sector organisations.
Launching it, Joseph Yieleh Chireh, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, praised the management of the NYEP and other partners for the introduction of the programme, and called for transparency in its implementation.
He gave the assurance that funding for the initiative was not going to be a problem because all the sources of funding had been identified. What was needed was proper coordination and harmony among the partners to eradicate challenges that could threaten the successful implementation of the programme.
The programme, he said would have a positive effect on efforts for sustainable job creation because the beneficiaries would be equipped with multiple skills enhance their livelihoods.
The Minister urged the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to take special interest in the programme since they would be required to play a supervisory role in ensuring that the roads were properly maintained by the workers.
“This will ensure that we get value for money,” he stressed.
Abuga Pele, National Coordinator of the NYEP, stressed the importance of the new initiative to national development, saying it would translate into savings from the high cost of road maintenance and reduction in road accidents.
He urged the workers to be committed to the objective of the initiative so as to justify the investment being made.
He promised fairness in the recruitment exercise, with the national interest being the paramount consideration.
