A 26 year popular model, Felivian .A. Ayariga, on Saturday dropped tears at the Accra Regional Police command on seeing that his fiancée, Rabieu, alias Raba or Alhaji, has been gunned down in a fierce battle with the Police.
Felivian who was picked by the Police to assist with investigation, nodded her head several times after identifying the fiancée with drops of tears and confirmed to the Police that Rabieu, his fiancée, was among the two robbers killed and were lying prostrate.
Rabieu, described by the Police as the number one armed robber in the country and his accomplice, Sam Peter, have been on Police wanted list for years.
The Deputy Accra Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, ‘engineer’ of last Friday operation which led to the ‘drop’ of the robbers at Madina who went there to rob asked Felivian if she could recalled that she was interrogated sometime ago on activities of Rabieu an answer the lady responded in assenting.
‘Do you also remember that we told you to advice your fiancée to desist from such activities else one day you will see his body laying here? Felivian said she vividly recalled.
ACP Yohuno said Felivian was invited some time ago when it came to their attention that she was the fiancée of Rabieu and was subsequently asked to advice him to refrain from the act.
According to Mr. Yohuno, the criminals have been on the Police wanted list for year and said the Police will continue to pursue criminals until they are completely eliminated including the young ones they have recruited and under internship.
The Regional Commander, Commissioner of Police Rose Bio Atinga said upon information that the gang were going to rob a Nigerian at Madina, personnel both in uniform and in plain cloth were dispatched to the scene to lay ambush.
Some of the Policeman laid ambush in the premises of the Institute of Local Government Studies, at Madina, not far from where the robbery was going to take place.
Madam Atinga said moments later the Police noticed that Rabieu, Peter and the third accomplice who managed to escape arrived on a motorbike ostensibly to hatch their plan.
She said when the robbers entered the house and attempted to strike the Police confronted them where there was exchange of fire.
In the process, Rabieu was said to have shot an officer but was gunned down from different angles by other officers who took cover at different location.
Police had it that the criminals having fore knowledge of their operation went to hide a pistol loaded with 10 rounds of ammunition in the garden at the scene. Unfortunately some children working at the garden saw the pistol hidden in a black polythene bag and handed it over to the Police.
However when the robbers went to the scene to pick the pistol, they discovered that the polythene bag contained a stone and not the pistol. This, the Police said infuriated the robbers who on entering the house to rob ordered the Nigerian they were going to rob to give them their gun.
The Police said that though Rabieu was shot several times on the stomach, he did not die, running to pick the motorbike until he was hit on the head by bullet, attributing his inability die from the gunshots to the fortification of charms that the robbers used.
Commissioner of Police Atinga said Rabieu masterminded series of robberies including the recent UBA bank robbery at Tema where a Policeman was killed, the Ecobank robbery at the Accra Shopping Mall, last year, the robbery at Antis, a building materials company at Haatso and the murder of one Louis Kofi Badu, owner of Louis Gas station, among others.
Madam Atinga thanked the informants for relaying information to the Police saying that the Police will not relent on their efforts adding that ‘the criminals can run but cannot hide’.
Later, the Police visited the scene of the incident and site of Rabiu at Madina which he bought for GHC21,000 for the construction of a storey building. The residents however said they did not know that he was an armed robber and that they only saw him in the evenings when he came to inspect the construction work on site.
Items recovered included a pistol with 10 rounds of ammunitions, three mobile phone and a talisman on the waist of Peter.
