Three chiefs in the Nkwanta North District have appealed to fishermen in their area to stop using chemicals to fish in the river bodies.
According to the chiefs, the practice which is common during the dry season to attract more fish, poisons the waters to the detriment of the people’s health.
The chiefs, Nana Donkor of Nabu-Donkor-Akura, Nana Konja IV of Kpassa and Nana Belie II of Nabu, expressed their concerns in separate interviews with the Times saying that such nefarious activities get worse during the harmattan.
While Nana Donkor and Nana Konja mentioned River Kpassa, Nana Beblie talked about River Mola as rivers which were facing pollution as a result of the bad fishing methods adopted by some of the fishermen.
The chiefs, therefore, called on the relevant governmental agencies to stop these unscrupulous people from exposing the communities to danger.
They said “those engaged in the act are difficult to apprehend because their activities are done under the cover of darkness”.
The worrying part of the situation stems from the fact that people in the communities have knowledge about those engaged in these bad deeds but for fear of reprisals, they have kept mute and will not give information which will lead to their arrest, the chiefs stated.
They urged people living near the water bodies to treat the rivers with respect since at the end of the day their families get to use the water for various household chores.
