Nigeria Touched By Ghana's Solidarity

 The government of Nigeria yesterday expressed immense appreciation to the government and people of Ghana for the support and solidarity they showed following the death of President Umaru Yar’Adua.
  “We are very appreciative of your support in our moment of grief,” President Goodluck Jonathan said when he welcomed President John Evans Atta Mills to the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja.
“We were touched by the immense solidarity you demonstrated,” he said in discussion with Ghana’s leader who was on a brief visit to Abuja to sympathize with his counterparts and the people of Nigeria over Mr Yar’Adua’s death.
  Ghana observed a three-day national mourning in solidarity with Nigeria.
  President Jonathan told President Mills that Nigeria was prepared to continue working with Ghana for the progress of their two nations.
  The Nigerian leader, commended President Mills for deciding to visit Nigeria even after the burial of the late President.
  He said he considered President Mills as a stalwart and would continue to cooperate with him in the interest and welfare of their people.
  He also praised President Mills for his leadership style and the socio-economic progress being made by Ghana, saying Nigeria was following Ghana’s progress with keen interest and drawing lessons from it.
  In addition, he thanked Ghana for the assurance of continued support, saying his focus was to continue pursuing the mandate and vision of the late President Yar’Adua for the remainder of his tenure.
  “We believe Nigeria and Ghana can work together to provide good leadership for the rest of Africa,” he said.
  President Mills, who was accompanied by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Nuhu Sharabutu and some Ministers of State, in his remarks, paid glowing tribute to the late President for his contribution to the progress of Nigeria and West Africa, saying “he has made his mark on the sands of time.”
  President Mills, who was in Equatorial Guinea on a State visit when the death of his 58 year-old Nigerian counterpart was announced on May 5, 2010, described it as a huge loss to the people of Nigeria and Africa in general.
 
Mr Jonathan, who became acting president in February following the absence of Mr. Yar’Adua from office due to prolonged illness, was sworn in as President on May 6, 2010.

President Mills also congratulated the new President on his assumption of office and expressed confidence that he would successfully deliver his mandate.
 
President Mills said President Jonathan was not a stranger to the new position, having been Vice and acting President for some time.
 
He assured President Jonathan of his “fullest cooperation and support,” saying “this is the time we have to work together to demonstrate to the world that we can fulfill the mandate of improving the living conditions of our people.”
 
“We have a lot in common,” he said, expressing the belief that the bilateral cooperation between the two countries would continue to be productive.
 
The National Chief Imam offered special prayers for God’s blessing for President Jonathan and his government.
