The government has assured local professionals in the building and construction industry of their involvement in the construction of affordable housing units under the STX Engineering and Construction deal.
The Minister of Water Resource, Works and Housing, Alban Bagbin, gave the assurance at the10th induction ceremony of newly registered architects in Accra yesterday.
In all, 37 people including 10 females were inducted into the Architects Registration Council, (ARC).
Mr. Bagbin said the ministry would be pleased to receive professional advice and proposals from Ghanaian architects which would go a long way to enrich the country’s experience in housing projects.
He said the ministry, in a bid to create jobs for it citizens, had signed a number of memoranda of understanding with both foreign and local investors to participate in the national housing programme.
The Minister advised the newly inducted architects to endeavour to abide by the ethics and code of conduct of their profession.
“It is very necessary that our new architects understand the importance of these ethics when delivering service to the general public,” he said.
Mr. Bagbin urged architects to be more creative and come out with delightful designs, which were relevant and affordable, taking into consideration the country’s culture, traditions, taste and the natural environment.
He adviced them to seek further knowledge, especially in this age of information technology to enable them to stay abreast of international standards and requirements of their profession.
Dr. Alfred Vanderpujie, Chief Executive Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly who was the guest speaker noted that slums were fast springing up in several places such as Chorkor, James Town, Sodom and Gommorah, adding “We also have the development of unauthorized structures which block natural waterways which must be addressed.”
He said the assembly was determined to halt the menace, which he said, was plaguing the city, adding that “To be able to achieve this vision, we need the professionals like you to provide guidance.”
The Registrar of ARC Ghana, Professor Ralph Mills-Tettey stressed the need for the architects to work towards safeguarding the cities.
He said as part of efforts to improve the profession in the country ARC organizes workshops and training programmes for building inspectors and related officers of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies.
