New Juaben Residents Kick Against Increased Tariffs

People in the New Juaben Municipality have kicked against the increase in electricity and water tariffs.

According to them, services rendered by the utility companies this leave much to be desired.

This was brought to the fore by participants at a Public Hearing on Tariff Proposals submitted by the Utilities regulatory Commission (PURC), at the Appenteng Hall, Koforidua, on Wednesday.

According to the participants the increases that will be affected by service providers, would heighten tension in the country since it would lead to the collapse of.

The Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, Mr. Baba Jamal said that the increases were unjustifiable as the service providers and performing poorly.

“You have no right to hold Ghanaians to ransom due to your inefficiencies it is untenable for service providers to ask us to pay high tariffs to pay high tariffs enable them to improve service.

He urged the service providers to put in place programmatic measures be to correct the erratic supply of electricity and water to the people.

“Ghanaians are prepared to pay more if they see improvement in Your Services” he said.

Dr. E.K. Annan, chairman of the PURC said that public hearings offered an important opportunity to receive consumer feedback on the performance of the utility companies in their localities and to obtain their input on how justified their utilities for tariff increases may be.

“PURC is aggressively pursuing its key function of protecting the interest of consumer.

“From October, this year, the Commission will begin to enforce penalties against the utilities for any damages caused by their failure to comply with these regulations, “he emphasised.
