A new district, to be known as Denkyembuo with Akwatia as the capital, is to be carved out of the Kwaebibirem District of the Eastern Region.

The name, proposed by the chiefs and citizens of the area, is to acknowledge the fact that the entire Akwatia area is endowed with diamond deposits.

The hint of the creation of the new district by Vice President John Mahama in a speech at the inauguration of the Great Consolidated Diamonds Ghana Limited at Akwatia recently, was received with great joy by all citizens of the area.

Speaking to the press later on the issue, the Akwatiahene, Osabarima Kofi Boateng III, commended the government for responding swiftly to their appeal and explained that their request was borne out of the fact that the present Kwaebibirem District was too large for effective and efficient administration and development.

He noted that splitting the present district into two would facilitate development besides ensuring equitable distribution of developmental projects.

Osabarima Kofi Boateng revealed that even before the Vice President dropped the hint, parcels of land had been identified for the administrative block and residential accommodation for the District Chief Executive and top officials of the assembly.

“Already there is accommodation for the junior staff of the assembly,” he said, explaining the Akwatia Traditional Council in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s built a number of houses for the then Kade-Akwatia Local Council, presently under the control of the Kwaebibirm District Assembly which could be renovated and used by the staff of the proposed district assembly.

Nana Akwatiahene stated that there had been long agitation for a separate district through a number of appeals to previous and present government.

He therefore expressed the people’s appreciation to the current government for responding positively to their appeal.

“It is a cherished dream come true,” he said and assured that they would provide every needed support to make the new district a great and successful one.

He said the Akwatia Constituency had all that required to make the new district viable.

Touching on takeover of the Ghana Consolidated Diamonds (GCD) by the Great Consolidated Diamonds Ghana Limited (GCDGL), Nana Akwatiahene said it was a heart-warming news since the fortunes of the mines and Akwatia were linked.

He said his people had noted with great satisfaction the commitment of the new company to improve the living conditions of the communities through job and wealth creation, education, infrastructural development and good environmental management.

The Akwatiahene said he and his people did not only wish the company well but would do everything humanly possible to cooperate with it to ensure its success.
