Members of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) have complied with the directive from their leadership and to return to the classroom to perform their normal duties.
This follows payment of the outstanding arrears of their vehicle maintenance and responsibility allowances.
“I can tell you on authority that, teachers due the allowances, apart from those in the Upper West Region, allowances, apart from those in the Upper West Region, had actually access the money in their bank accounts,” NAGRAT president, Christian Addai – Poku told the Times.
The association embarked on a indefinite strike on March 1, 2010 to press home its demand for payment of all out standing vehicle maintenance and responsibility allowances due to teachers.
This was after the Ghana Education Service (GES) had reneged on a memorandum of understanding signed between both parties on November 25, last year, on payment of the allowances.
Mr Addai Polu told the times on Friday that, reports from pocket of schools the districts; indicate that payment of the allowances had reflected in the bank accounts our members”
‘We are happy with this development and would monitor events from the regions and prevail on our members in the Upper West to submit their inputs to their Regional Directors for onward submission to the GES Headquarters for the necessary action.”
On why teachers in the Upper West were left out of the initial payment, he explained that, inputs on teachers due the allowance were not made readily available to the Regional Director.
Mr. Addai – Poku said, however the GH¢10 million released by the government for payment of all outstanding arrears and worker of the GES, did not include allowances for those in Upper West”.
