Upper West Regional chairman of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Mr Calistus Haruna has been elected Presiding Member of the Nadowili District Assembly.

Mr Haruna polled 48 votes with three against, thus exceeding the two-thirds votes of 38 required to be confirmed by the 54-member house.

Earlier four other candidates, namely Andrew Kpan, Gaeten Kumpuolo, James Oasah and Godfrey Bamba who filed their nominations to contest for the position all withdrew in favour of Mr Haruna on the grounds of consensus building and unity of the Assembly to pave the way for his overwhelming endorsement as the new Presiding Member.

Addressing the Assembly, Mr Haruna said his vision was to lead the people to attain total development and urged his colleague Assembly Members to help him attain that dream.

He said the era of Assembly Members attending meeting several hours behind schedule should over and that punctuality and doing things on time would be his hallmark.

He promised that the welfare of Assembly Members would be well catered for under his leadership adding “Assembly Members would no longer queue for food and allowances.

That is not honourable and can no longer be tolerated.”

The new Presiding Member commended the four who step down for him and the entire membership of the Assembly for the confidence reposed him and promised to lead to the Assembly to bring the needed development to the people.

“Let us work in unity and be one another’s keeper,” Mr Haruna told his colleagues.
