Ms Michelle Bachelet,UN Under-Secretary- General and Executive Director of UN Women,the UN organisation dedicated to gender equality and empowerment of women, has commended Ghana's Women and Children's Affairs Ministry for advancing the cause of women and pledged her support for its activities.

Ms Bachelet,a former President of Chile and a specialist paediatrician, made the pledge when Mrs Juliana Azumah-Mensah,the Minister for Women and Children's Affairs paid a courtesy call on her in New York to discuss matters of mutual interest and to seek UN Women's support for women and children in Ghana.

The UN Women Executive Director praised Mrs Azumah-Mensah for her passion in pursuing the women's agenda and promised that UN Women,
established in July last year,would work together with institutions such as UNECA, AU and the UN to support the work of the ministry.

Ms Bachelet promised support the ministry in areas such as political and economic empowerment of women, peace and security,violence against women,HIV/AIDS,maternal mortality and child health,advocacy and also technical assistance for capacity-building Mrs Azumah- Mensah thanked Ms Bachelet for her assurance of
support for Ghana and presented her with a three-year strategic plan drawn out of an institiutional assessment of the ministry and
its future plans.

She congratulated Ms Bachelet for her appointment as the first Executive Director of UN Women, and was confident that she would
make a great impact on the lives of women and children given her background as a paediatrician.

Mrs Azumah-Mensah said her ministry had collaborated well with other UN agencies in Ghana and hoped the presence of UN Women
would soon be felt in the country.

Present at the meeting was Mr G.K Kumor, a director at the Women and Children Affairs Ministry and Mrs Charllote Djan of the Ghana
Permanent Mission to the UN in New York.
