Most commercial drivers plying they Accra-Tema motor-way have tampered with the speed control checks (speedometers) of their vehicles, a research conducted by the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) has revealed.

Out of a total of 90 cars inspected at the 37 Military Hospital, Kwame Nkurmah Circle and the Achimota Stations, the speedometers of 75 were not working, and those of 10 were not functioning properly. Only five had normal functioning systems.

“This makes nonsense of the 100 kilometer per hour speed limit as required by law,” said a statement signed by Kofi Kapito Chief Executive of the CPA.

The research revealed that most of the drivers deliberately removed the speedometer cables to render the instrument useless.

According to the research some of the drivers deliberately removed the cables so that their car owners would not know the distance they traveled in a day.

“It is therefore of no surprise that most accidents on the Accra Tema motor-way, have been found to be caused by overspeeding,” the CPA said.

It reminded transport owners that they were rendering a service to their consumers (passengers) for a fee and should therefore do everything possible to ensure their safety.

The statement appealed to the relevant authorities to prosecute drivers who flout road safety regulations.
