An irate mob, supposedly foot soldiers of the ruling National Democratic Congress party (NDC), yesterday tried to prevent ex-President John Agyekum Kufour from inaugurating the Abossey Okai Cluster of Schools.
The mob locked the main gate to the school with padlocks around 7.am, and took the keys to the offices of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to prevent the school authorities from preparing the place for the occasion that was scheduled to begin at 12.pm.
They also prevented workers of the Ablekuma Central Sub-Metro of the AMA from cleaning the premises of the school.
Their reason for taking such line of action was that President J.E.A Mills or the Mayor should be the person to inaugurate the school and not ex-President Kufuor.
However, some members of the main opposition party (NPP) were incensed by the action and chanting war songs, thronged the school and unlocked the doors.
They were of the view that ex-President Kuffuor was the right person to inaugurate the school because he is the President of Alliance for Africa Foundation, a non-governmental organisation which funded the rehabilitation of the school and, therefore, deserved the honour.
It took police officials some time before calm was restored and the NDC foot soldiers left the venue.
The programme which was slated to start at 12 pm, finally started at about 2 pm.
Inaugurating the school, the former President urged the public to exercise restraint in all their dealings, stressing that they must not allow partisan politics to disturb the peace of the country.
He said as citizens, the wellbeing of the country should be at the heart of each person and people should learn to appreciate any deed that geared towards the good of the country.
“This work was not done to score any political points but to promote the education of these young children”, he said.
Mr. Kufuor noted that education was the key to liberating Ghanaians from poverty and stressed the need for all stakeholders to help improve it saying, “government alone cannot do everything.”
He said as president of Alliance for Africa Foundation Ghana, he made sure the contractors worked within a period of six months to allow the school children to return school.
“Our goal is to provide sound education and this is just the beginning of many good things to happen”, he said.
The Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Rejoice Sosu, expressed appreciation to Mr. Kufuor and his team for turning the once dilapidated building into an ultra-modern one.
She was confident that the gesture would go a long way to raise the standard of education in the school and assured that the school authorities would do everything possible to maintain the school for posterity.
The ultra modern school facility which has 18 classrooms constructed was at a cost of GH¢400,000.
