A nursing mother who was in jail at the Kumasi Central prisons with her six-month-old baby, has been discharged following the intervention of the Ashanti Regional Minister, Kofi Opoku Manu.

The Minister had to pay GH˘400 being a fine imposed on the 26-year-old nursing mother, Yaa Yaa, from Kyekyerewere in the Afigya-Sekyere District.
Yaa Yaa was sentenced to six months hard labour when she could not pay the fine, and had already served three months.

In addition to paying her fine, the Minister gave her GH˘100 to meet her transportation and other expenses back home.

Yaa Yaa, was charged with offensive conduct after a confrontation with a relative, and was convicted on June 3 by the Kodie District Court.

Mr Opoku Manu, who is the chairman of the Ashanti Regional Prisons Committee, saw the woman during an inspection tour of the Central Prisons on July28, and had compassion on the baby whom he said had done nothing to be in the prison.

On hearing the story of Yaa Yaa, the Minister authorized that the Regional Administration should raise funds to pay the fine.

Hence, last Thursday, Yaa Yaa and her baby walked out of the prison as free people.

Yaa Yaa was born in Abidjan to Ghanaian parents both of whom died recently and were buried there.

After the burial, she said she found life tough and therefore traced her parents’ relatives to Kyekyerewere barely a year ago.
