The Minister of Education, Mrs. Betty Mould Iddrisu believed the passage of the Colleges of the Education bill will raise the social status of teachers and improve quality education in the country.
In this regard, she said the Ministry has committed itself to strengthening the institutional and resource bases in all the 38 Colleges of Education.
In a speech read on her behalf at the launch of the 50th Anniversary of ST Teresa’s College of Education, Hohoe in Accra, Mrs. Betty Mould Iiddrisu stated that this will enable the various colleges to cope with the challenges associated with their transition to tertiary status.
Acknowledging that the Colleges of Education do not have all the resources required to deliver quality education, she agreed that upgrading the physical and academic infrastructure of all the colleges which is ongoing through the Get fund infrastructural project was key.
She said St. Teresa’s College has benefitted from GH¢400,000.00 in addition to GH¢27,000.00 for its infrastructure research and staff development this academic year.
Mrs. Betty Mould Iddrisu further challenged the College Administration to be transformational in their administrative as well as teaching and learning processes.
Her ladyship the Chief Justice, Mrs. Georgina Theodora Wood who was represented also stressed the importance of the teacher’s influence in national development.
She disabused the minds of many who regarded the teaching profession as the last resort when attempt to get into perceived prestigious careers have failed.
The Chief Justice was unhappy of low standards in the country’s educational system and suggested that recruitment into teaching the profession must be subjected to rigorous standard.
Mrs. Angela Kutin Tandoh, Principal of the College announced that preparations are far advanced for staff development policy to offer opportunities for further training of staff and to also relieve the teaching staff who fall short of the policy.
She appealed to stakeholders to assist in the construction of an ultra-modern auditorium and the rehabilitation of the Vice-Principal’s bangalow.
In a short address, President of ST Teresa’s old students Association, Mr. Harry Attipoe entreated products of the College to come on board and make a significant contribution to their college to benefit generations yet unborn.
