Mfantsipim Excels In Milo Basketball

Mfantsipim Senior High School (SHS) made it to the semi-finals of the Boys’ division of the basketball category in the Milo Schools’ Sports Festival in Kumasi.

They beat Sunyani SHS 45-30 in a thrilling encounter at the Kumasi Polytechnic.

Mfantsipim SHS would play alongside Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS), St Peter’s SHS and Ghana SHS.

They would meet GSTS whilst St Peter’s would pitch camp against Ghana SHS in the semi-final scheduled for the weekend.

On the way to the semi-finals Mfantsipim beat Keta SHS 62-40, GSTS white-wash Kanton SHS 53-5, whilst St. Peter’s beat Navrongo SHS 41-39 with Ghana SHS accounting for St. Thomas Aquinas SHS 41-49.

Speaking to Times Sports in an interview, Mr Iddrisu Gamel, Basketball co-ordinator for the festival commended Nestle Ghana Limited, sponsors of the event for adding basketball competitions in this year’s festival.

He contended that organised basketball at the grassroots had become very important in Ghana’s quest to develop lesser known sports to an appreciable level.

He, however stressed the need for Nestle Ghana Limited to stretch their hands to cover female basketball competitions in the future to unearth potential stars for the nation.

The 20th edition of the Milo Schools’ Sports Festival was opened in Kumasi on Monday, under the theme: Get your Child Into Sports”

About 12 teams from the 10 regions in Ghana are vying for laurels in football, volleyball and basketball at the Baba Yara Stadium, Kumasi Polytechnic and Prempeh College.

In the opening soccer match between Potsion Sabbis and Holy Trinity SHS, the former beat the latter 5-0.

In the boys’ under-12 soccer match, Ashanti Region also walloped Western Region 5-0 while in the under -15 Girls’ category, Ashanti Region whipped Upper East 5-0.

Five times former champions, Osei Kyeretwie SHS in Kumasi, pipped St. John’s SHS 1-0 in an exciting soccer encounter.
