The management of Metro Mass Transport Company (MMT) yesterday, said the company would not condone any acts of transporting contraband goods into and within the country, and as such does not appreciate reports associating it with the recent incident of carrying fake textiles into Ghana.
Speaking to the Times in Accra, Mr. Martin Afram, Deputy Managing Director, explained that the core point of MMT’s establishment was to make transportation accessible in Ghana and that MMT would not operate any service to any destination beyond the borders of Ghana, with Togo being no exception.
He was referring to a publication in Wednesday’s Times on an incident on the Accra – Aflao road where security officers intercepted three bus loads of fake textiles and other imported goods. One of the intercepted vehicles belonged to the company.
Mr. Afram said “MMT’s buses operating on the Aflao corridor go about their normal business at the Aflao loading point by carrying passengers and their luggage to their destinations in Ghana,” emphasising that, “MMT does not operate to and from Togo.”
He said“MMT does not have the authority and expertise to search passengers’ luggage and validate payments for custom duties. It is, therefore, difficult for the drivers and conductors to tell that goods already past the nation’s borders are indeed unaccustomed."
Mr. Afram warned that the company's management would, however, not hesitate to sanction any employee who would conspire with commuters to transport contraband goods.
"Employees are advised to report any suspicious character or luggage to the security agencies”, he said.
He further cautioned MMT’s passengers to desist from using MMT’s bus service as a medium to indulge in acts that breach the laws of Ghana, adding that MMT would guarantee its passengers of safe, reliable and affordable means of transport around the entire country.
