The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) will now be able to conduct research into paternity testing and genetic diversity studies thanks to the donation of a GH˘600,000 worth of assorted laboratory and office equipment, by the Plant Science Group (PSG) of the Wageningen University and Research Centre in the Netherlands to the university.

The university will also be able to train students and conduct research in areas of cell and molecular biology as well as genetic improvements of crops and animals.

While it has initiated a memorandum of understanding with the Wageningen University, to collaborate on certain areas of mutual benefit, exchange programmes for staff and students, joint training for PhD students and the establishment of joint research projects.

The equipment, donated to the Molecular Biology Laboratory of the Biochemistry  and Biotechnology Department, include a Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) sequencer, assorted centrifuges and incubators, freeze dryer, growth chambers, flow cabinets, leaf area meter, spectrophotometers among others.

At the handing over of the equipment on Thursday, Professor Kwasi  Kwafo Adarkwah, Vice Chancellor of KNUST, said the university’s dream of establishing a food analysis laboratory for the food science and technology programme was hampered by the absence of laboratory equipment. He said the delivery of the equipment which include tools necessary for food analysis, could help it fulfill its dream.

Prof. Adarkwa thanked Dr. Peter Twumasi, an alumnus of both the KNUST and the Wageninigen University for initiating the laboratory and office equipment transfer initiative (LOETI), under which the equipment was transferred from the Wageninigen University to the KNUST.

Dr. Ernest Van den Ende, the Director of PSG, Wageningen University, in a speech read on his behalf, said his school donated the equipment because it wanted to help Africa and Ghana to advance in agricultural and general scientific researches.

He said to fulfill the Millennium Development Goals  (MDG’s) of which agriculture is prominent, it behoved governments and policy makers to stimulate scientific institutions to further develop their scientific  activities.

“Since agriculture is Ghana’s most important economic sector, this new strategy specifically is important for Ghana.”

Dr. Van den Ende called for strong scientific partnership among the various regions of the world to help meet the challenges associated with MDG’s.

Professor Aboagye Menyeh, Provost of College of Science, KNUST, expressed gratitude to the Wageningen University for its kind gesture and called on the government for further support to enable the college of science furnish its new building.
