The Jomoro District Assembly made a remarkable improvement in its revenue generation with a collection of GH¢72,093.95 between January and June this year.
This represents about 25 per cent increase over the 2008 projected revenue of GH¢550,000.
This District Chief Executive for Jomoro, Mr. Victor Nyanyi Kablan, disclosed this at the first ordinary meeting of the third session of the fifth general meeting of the assembly held at Half-Assini on Friday.
He noted that the assembly has the potential of generating more revenue if the assembly members had accepted the challenge of educating their people on the need of their areas.
Mr. Kablan, therefore, appealed to the assembly members to educate their people to honour their tax obligations.
He also informed the assembly members that the assembly had received its first quarter allocation of the District Assemblies Common Fund of GH¢165,193.12 out of a total amount of GH¢363,636.93.
Mr. Kablan indicated that quality education continued to engage the attention of the assembly and it is currently providing financial support for the district and regional science technical and mathematics education programme at a cost of GH¢2,700 as well as supporting sports activities of the education sector.
In addition, the DCE said the assembly was also sponsoring students at the teacher training colleges in an attempt to encourage them to return to the district to teach after completion of their studies.
Mr. Kablan said on health, the assembly had repackaged the contract on the abandoned side-ward project at the Half-Assini Government Hospital and has re-awarded to a more serious contractor who has already moved to site.
In addition, Mr. Kablan said the assembly was committed to continuing with the policy of assisting students in health training institutions who are prepared to work in the district after their training.
On the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), the DCE disclosed that so far a total of 54,234 people in the district had registered with the scheme representing 51 per cent of the population of the district.
Mr. Kablan said the surfacing of roads within Half-Assini and Elubo townships would continue.
He said about 70 per cent of the population in the district were currently enjoying potable water.
This represents about 25 per cent increase over the 2008 projected revenue of GH¢550,000.
