Japanese Volunteers have embarked on a project to make science subjects unproblematic and easy for students in the Northern Region.

Mr. Kazuhiko HIGUCHI, Coordinator at Ghana office of the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers, (JOCV), explained that the move was part of Japan efforts to encourage students to study science related courses.

‘The Tour he said aimed at assisting students and teachers alike to understand how to use locally-made materials for scientific experiments.

According to HIGUCHI, such transfer of knowledge and expertise from the volunteers was another form of Japan’s contribution apart from Official Development Assistance to ensuring a better world.

Mr. Higuchi said this in Tamale at weekend during a science experimental tour organized by The Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers, serving in the northern region for some 450 school children.

The selected Schools include St. Charles Senior High School (SHS) and the Choggu Yapalsi M/A Primary School children who for the first time in their lives, had the feel of making Plastic Bottle Rocket and others important scientific experiments like how to Burn Powder, operate String telephone and Hot-air Balloons.

Mr. Higuchi said the experimental tour was to afford an opportunity to the students to understand and appreciate the importance of science in a better way.

The Japanese Volunteer Co-ordinator said “Many students who do not have well-equipped science laboratories in their schools had the chance to see and use such scientific instruments for the first time.”

Mr. Ewuntomah James Kala, Tamale Metro Training Coordinator at the Ghana Education Service, welcomed Japanese volunteers support to education over the years saying, their presence helps shape knowledge from the abstract to the realities.

He said demystifying science education was very important in the country’s quest to achieve development as such the GES will sustain efforts to practicalize teaching and learning of science even after JOSV had pulled.

Mr. Kala commended the Japan’s government annual support to selected teachers to undertake periodic exchange program to Japan.

Ayishetu Iddrisu, a pupil of Choggu Yapalsi M /A Primary School, expressed her delight in participating in the science experiment. She was grateful to the organizer for exposing them to the use of common household items such as plastic coca cola bottle to making science interesting.
